ANOTHER RECORD YEAR FOR LAND ROVER SALESWarwick, 20 December 2002Staff at Land Rover UK’s Warwick headquarters have received a bumper present from Father Christmas in the shape of record sales figures for the third year running. Buoyed up by the launch of new models such as the new Range Rover and Discovery and major revisions to the Freelander and Defender, Land Rover sales are set to top at over 47,000 vehicles. Star performer is the new Range Rover which has notched up over 5,000 sales since its March launch. The Defender, which can trace its lineage directly back to the original Land Rover launched in 1948, is also set to show a 10% increase over the previous year with over 5,500 units sold. Sales of the UK's best-selling 4x4, the Freelander will be more than 24,000 while the revisions to the Discovery model will push sales to over 11,000. Reflecting UK trends, sales of Freelander models fitted with the 2.0 litre, 4-cylinder Td4 common rail diesel engine are over a third up on 2001. This is the third record year running for Land Rover in the UK, further consolidating its position as the country's leading 4x4 manufacturer. Mike Wright, managing director of Land Rover UK expressed his pleasure at the result: ‘This year’s sales reflect the excellence of Land Rover products, backed by innovative, award-winning advertising. The new Range Rover has received universal acclaim and the new 2003 Discovery has underlined its position as the leading medium 4x4. Revisions to the Freelander, have asserted its relevance as the UK’s best selling 4x4 while the Defender – also subject to a major upgrade – has stormed back into a leading position in the 4x4 utility market.’ |
BMW to unveil xActivity concept vehicle at Detroit18 December 2002
The xActivity, designed as a "frame-structure convertible", features proportions and design elements clearly linking it to the X5, but also individual qualities that look ahead to what future BMW SAVs may feature. Design Reinforced, longitudinal rails connect the A-pillars to the rear of the car on both sides, negating the need for B- or C-pillars and providing the opportunity to offer an SAV with a distinct sporty look. The styling is complemented with a combination of matt and gloss surfaces in ‘Bronze Moss’ paintwork that alternates between bronze, green and blue-grey depending on how the light is reflecting on the vehicle’s surfaces. TEN TERIOS JOIN EUROPE’S LARGEST 4x4 FLEET16 December 2002
SHB Hire Ltd has been hiring out 4x4s since 1968 and chose five Terios EL manuals and five EL automatics after extensive evaluation. The 1.3 litre five-door mini-SUV features permanent four-wheel drive and a useful 185 mm ground clearance yet gives 41.5 mpg on the Extra Urban Cycle. In fact, for the third year running the Terios tops the Environmental Transport Association’s ‘Car Buyer’s Guide' in the ‘Off-Road’ section. Commenting on the deal, Daihatsu Fleet Manager, George Bushney, said: "I am confident more business will follow once SHB realises how nimble, reliable and fuel-efficient the Terios is in service." |
NEW CHEROKEE BOOSTS RECORD NOVEMBER FOR CHRYSLER AND JEEP IN THE UK11 December 2002Huge interest in the new Jeep Cherokee has helped to boost the November sales figure of Chrysler and Jeep vehicles in the UK. Registrations of Chrysler and Jeep cars climbed to 1,730 for November – the company’s best-ever for the month – and way ahead of last November’s 1,394 figure. Much of this success is down to the latest version of the popular Jeep Cherokee, of which 573 units were sold during the month. The enhanced choice of 2.4 litre, 3.7 V6 and 2.5 CRD has helped. Another diesel version, the automatic-only 2.8 CRD will be available in dealer showrooms later this month. Other notable successes was the 312 Jeep Grand Cherokees. The news comes as the Chrysler Group in Auburn Hills, Michigan announces total International sales (for markets outside the United States, Canada and Mexico) were 15,377 – a four per cent increase over November 2001. Jeep brand sales were up seven per cent for the month with 7,098 units. Simon Elliott, Managing Director of Chrysler and Jeep in the UK said: "I’m always happy when we are breaking records and here is another one. It’s a remarkable achievement. These November figures are a tribute to the hard work put in by our dealer network and everyone connected with Chrysler and Jeep. I am sure they will be a springboard for us to use as we go into 2003." |
NEW LAND CRUISER HAMMERS COMPETITION ON OWNERSHIP COSTS11 December 2002 Key Points
The new Land Cruiser enjoys improved insurance ratings all round, up to two groups lower than for the Land Cruiser Colorado which it replaces. A 12E rating for the entry level LC2 diesel version is equal lowest in its class with the Land Rover Discovery TD5. What makes the Land Cruiser a clear winner over the Discovery is the fact it packs more punch – 161bhp from the 3.0 litre D-4D unit as opposed to 136bhp from the 2.5-litre TD5. The Land Cruiser’s value is further emphasised by the fact the next nearest competitors in insurance rating terms, the Isuzu Trooper and Nissan Patrol, are classified a full two groups higher. Similar insurance benefits apply to the 4.0-litre V6 petrol Land Cruiser models, which will go on sale in the UK next March. Both the LC3 and LC4 versions enjoy a 14E rating, two groups lower than the Mitsubishi Shogun and Jeep Cherokee. Even though the all-new V6 engine is more powerful than the petrol unit used in the outgoing Colorado, the insurance rating has dropped by one level. The full Thatcham ABI insurance ratings for the new Land Cruiser are: - Land Cruiser 3.0-litre D-4D dieselLC2 12E LC3 13E LC4 14E LC5 14E Land Cruiser 4.0-litre V6 petrol LC3 14E LC4 14E LC5 15E The excellent insurance ratings are just one aspect of the new Land Cruiser’s all round performance on cost of ownership. Land Cruiser can take comfort from the fact that when it comes to the cost of basic parts replacement and maintenance, once again it knocks the opposition for six. Take, for example, the Land Rover Discovery 2.5 TD5, where eight like-for-like front crash replacement parts together cost 21.2 per cent more than for the new Land Cruiser 3.0 D-4D. Fitting a new headlamp unit to your Land Cruiser will cost less than £100, compared to £460 for the Discovery. The Mitsubishi Shogun requires a big wallet too, when you realise you will pay almost 41 per cent more to replace rear crash parts for the GDI 3.2 model compared to the new Land Cruiser. Service parts too are more expensive at 42.7 per cent more for the combined cost of oil and air filters and front and rear brake pads. The Isuzu Trooper 3.0D and the Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Auto 2.7 CRD both prove comprehensively more expensive to fix, while a complete rear end repair for Nissan’s Patrol SE 3.0 D will cost you more than twice as much as for the new Land Cruiser. The attached table gives a ‘blow-by-blow’ breakdown of how the new Land Cruiser achieves its all-round price advantage over the competition. The new Land Cruiser’s mighty market appeal is further reinforced by the fact it is available in a wider range of trim levels than ever before and that prices will start from just £23,995 for the entry level LC2 three door diesel model with manual transmission. New Land Cruiser goes on sale in the UK on 2 January.

THE ALL-NEW TOYOTA LAND CRUISER6 December 2002
Key Points
Short Story
Replacing the Land Cruiser Colorado, the new Land Cruiser will be offered with a choice of two engines: a new 4.0-litre VVT-i V6 petrol unit and Toyota’s latest generation 3.0-litre D-4D common rail turbo diesel. The turbo diesel will be available from launch on 2 January, with the V6 following from March next year. Available in three and five-door body styles, with the ‘wide body’ styling treatment on selected models and four distinct trim levels - LC2, LC3, LC4 and LC5 - the new Land Cruiser offers a wider market appeal than ever before. On-the-road prices will start at £23,995 for the LC2 three-door diesel with manual gearbox. Pricing and equipment levels will give the new Land Cruiser a key competitive advantage in the core UK SUV market. All new Land Cruisers will come with a three-year / 60,000-mile warranty and three-year paint and 12-year anti-perforation warranties, in line with all other new Toyota models. Technically Advanced The new Land Cruiser is one of the most technically advanced vehicles to be launched by Toyota. It is equipped with a series of electronic systems designed to make driving on and off-road safer, more refined and more pleasurable. These include a world first with the introduction of electronic Hill-start Assist Control (HAC). This detects if the vehicle begins to slip backwards or develops wheelspin when starting on an uphill gradient and automatically adjusts the braking and wheel rotation to allow a controlled get-away. It forms one element of the Brake Control System, together with Downhill Assist Control (DAC). This system is available on LC4 and LC5 with automatic transmission. A Truly Modern Toyota The new Toyota Land Cruiser builds on a heritage of more than 50 years but is a truly modern Toyota. It is designed and engineered to embody the four elements of the Toyota European DNA that defines the company’s current product generation.
Design With a European Flair An international team of engineers and designers developed the new Toyota Land Cruiser, working on an original concept produced by Toyota’s ED2 design studio in the South of France. ED2 has also been the cradle of the new Avensis, Yaris, Corolla and Avensis Verso models. The designers worked to an initial concept of a contemporary evolution of the traditional durability and power of the Land Cruiser. The result is a look that is strong and purposeful, building on the identity of the Land Cruiser Colorado, but interpreted in a contemporary, European-influenced style. Both three and five-door versions will be available, in normal or wide-body styles (depending on grade). The five-door accommodates up to eight people in three rows of forward-facing seats. All seats are equipped with three-point seatbelts and adjustable headrests. Most Powerful Land Cruiser Yet The new Toyota Land Cruiser will be offered with a choice of two engines, offering a balance of power and economy that will make them the most efficient in their class. The all-new 4.0-litre VVT-i V6 petrol unit, available in the UK from next March, is the most powerful engine yet to be offered in a Land Cruiser. Constructed in lightweight alloy, it develops 245bhp at 5,200rpm and offers 382Nm of torque at 3,800rpm. Acceleration from rest to 62mph can be achieved in 9.5 seconds. The Land Cruiser will be available from launch on 2 January with the latest development of Toyota’s common rail 3.0-litre D-4D turbo diesel engine. Power output is 161bhp at 3,400rpm and maximum torque is a formidable 343Nm, available from 1,600 to 3,200rpm. The engine’s torque capabilities set a new standard in the market segment and give the new Land Cruiser distinct advantages in off-road and towing performance. On-road it will reach a top speed of 103mph (Auto:106mph) and accelerate from rest to 62mph in 12.7 seconds. New Sales Ambitions The new Land Cruiser will play an important role in Toyota’s strategy for further development of its European market performance. In the UK Toyota expects 2,500 sales for the new model in 2003, contributing to a Europe-wide target of more than 30,000. This in turn will help progress towards Toyota’s medium term goal of 800,000 total European sales by 2005. |
POPULAR JEEP® CHEROKEE DIESEL TO TAKE ON NORTH AMERICA
29 November 2002 Just weeks before the new Jeep® Cherokee 2.8 CRD comes to Britain, the Chrysler Group has announced it will introduce the car to one of the most diesel-sceptical countries in the world – North America. To encourage American acceptance of diesels, Chrysler Group will test the North American market with a diesel-powered Jeep Cherokee (Liberty in North America) in 2004, Dieter Zetsche, President and Chief Executive Officer of Chrysler Group announced this week. The United States could reduce its oil use by approximately 800 million gallons and carbon dioxide emissions by eight million tons a year if Americans bought diesels at the same rate as Europeans, added Dr Zetsche. And he called on regulators and oil refiners to work together to resolve diesel emissions challenges that will be tested by new exhaust standards to go into effect in 2006. "The best way to show our commitment to work together is to bring a modern, clean diesel passenger vehicle to market, which we intend to do," Dr Zetsche said. While DaimlerChrysler offers a range of diesel-powered passenger vehicles in Europe, where approximately 35 percent of vehicles are powered by diesel engines, the Jeep Liberty will be the first light-duty sport-utility vehicle with a diesel powertrain to go on sale in the United States and Canada. Here in the UK the Cherokee 2.8 CRD is set to reach Chrysler and Jeep’s 92-strong dealer network later this month. Powered by a 2776 cc common rail turbo-diesel engine produced by DaimlerChrysler, it will be available with automatic transmission. The 108 mph car returns 27.4 mpg on the combined cycle and is priced from £20,995. Like all Jeep vehicles, it comes with a three year, 60,000 mile warranty, roadside assistance and seven year, unlimited mileage anti-corrosion guarantee. Simon Elliott, Managing Director of Chrysler and Jeep in the UK said: "We know how good this car is and the dealers can’t wait to get it in the showrooms. The combination of performance, refinement and Jeep’s unbeatable go-anywhere capability, combined with impressive fuel economy, is a package that’s too good to overlook." Around the world, the Chrysler Group currently offers diesel powertrain options in the Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chrysler PT Cruiser and Chrysler Voyager people carriers. In Western Europe, diesel-powered vehicles comprise 56 percent of Chrysler Group's total sales volume. |
New look Ford Ranger now even better value for money
BRENTWOOD, 15 November, 2002 "We're introducing the new Ranger with the same price or at a lower price than previous models because we know that the Ranger customer wants an exceptional package and unbeatable value," said Steve Parker, commercial vehicles director, Ford of Britain. Style and Function - 2003 Shogun Stays Ahead
26 November 2002 With brightwork chrome conspicuous by its absence, the front end of the 2003 Shogun embodies a centrally mounted grille wing bearing an assertive three-diamond corporate logo. This host of styling and technology enhancements will come at no extra cost as Mitsubishi adopts at least "carry over" pricing strategy across a simplified and higher specification range. With an unchallenged motorsport rally-raid heritage, emphasising the sports in sports utility, the 2003 Shogun will include side airbags and easily assimilated digital instrumentation as standard equipment. As the new Shogun sustains the model's reputation for distinctive looks, commanding road presence, dynamic driving qualities and impressive equipment levels Mitsubishi's styling guru, Olivier Boulay, has hinted at striking, future 4x4 contenders. The stunning Shogun (or Pajero) Evolution 2+2 was taken from computer image to prototype in two months and has now been transformed into a full-blooded, rally-winning, taking victory on the recent United Arab Emirates desert challenge on its competitive debut. Boulay, Mitsubishi's corporate general manager in charge of product design, believes the Shogun (Pajero) Evo, or Desert GT concept, could become a limited-run production vehicle, backed by a strong business case. He revealed: "We do not build concept cars for their own sake. Further down the road, or track, this car provides strong visual cues which will influence the next generation Shogun and other vehicles." It forms the advanced guard for a new style of Mitsubishi with more sculpted integrated lines and high-tech interiors mirroring uncluttered. classic Japanese design from other spheres including electronic goods. SHOGUN ROAD AND TRACK STATISTICS Seven Paris-Dakar rally raid wins, four cross-country FIA world cups and the recent rally raid debut victory on United Arab Emirates desert challenge. Mainstay of brand's UK sales, with anticipated 15% of total Mitsubishi sales this year. Sold nearly 70,500 British market units since 1983 introduction. The ground breaking SUVs production tally, since 1981, stands currently at over 2.1 million units |
NEW FORESTER WINS TOP JAPANESE AWARD
25 November 2002 Subaru’s totally new Forester sports-utility – which only went on sale in the UK last month – has won the fiercely-fought ‘Special Award’ as part of the 2003 RJC ‘Car of the Year’ awards. The RJC ‘Car of the Year’ awards is one of the most prestigious automotive awards in Japan and is presented at the highly-respected Automotive Researchers’ and Journalists’ Conference. The judges chose the All-Wheel Drive Forester because of its convenient and practical body size, comfortable ride and handling precision. They also praised the new Subaru’s combination of off-road ability, thanks to a 190 mm ground clearance, and on-road stability created by the low-centre-of-gravity ‘boxer’ engine. The new Forester is priced from £16,445 on-the-road, leads the petrol SUV class for economy and emissions with, for example, 42.2 mpg on the Extra Urban Cycle for the 2.0 X, and offers owners significantly reduced insurance and repair costs. |
I.A.M. FLEET TO INTRODUCE NEW 4 X 4 APPROACH COURSE22 November 2002 IAM Fleet is to introduce a new initiative aimed at drivers of 4 x 4 vehicles, offering a one day “on and off road” course in partnership with HLR Training. This joint venture is a unique partnership recognising the needs of drivers who regularly use their vehicles both on and off road. It will particularly appeal to drivers who have an interest in exploring the full potential of their vehicles. Bob Hinchliffe of IAM Fleet said: “We are delighted to announce this exciting new initiative because there has long been a demand for an on-road element to complement the off-road training available to 4 x 4 drivers.” HLR Training’s Richard Beddall said: “The driving characteristics of 4 x 4 vehicles on road means that training is essential to achieve high standards of road safety. This partnership is a perfect combination from the leaders in on and off road driver training. The course will provide the drivers with a comprehensive understanding of their vehicle while learning about defensive driving at the same time.” While aimed primarily at private 4 x 4 owners, the course will be attractive for those companies whose employees have to drive off road. The courses are to be held at a number of venues throughout the country. The day will involve a short initial briefing followed by practical training. Participants use their own vehicle for the on-road session and the off-road vehicle is provided by the course organisers. Mr Hinchliffe said: “This is the first of a number of exciting initiatives that these two companies will be introducing to the fleet user and the private motorist.” IAM Fleet, part of the Institute of Advanced Motorists, provides advanced driver training for corporate clients in the UK and world-wide. Clients include BP, the BBC, BOC, Sothebys, Castle Cement, Ernst & Young, ChevronTexaco and TNT. Risk management services and appropriate training for drivers of all classes of vehicle are available through tailor-made courses. HLR Training provides high quality driver training courses for fleet operators of 4 x 4 vehicles of all types and makes throughout the UK. The company has recently been chosen by the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards to undertake a programme of off-road driver training. HLR Training also provides regular training programmes for organisations such as English Nature, British Red Cross, National Grid and British Geological Survey. LAND ROVER UK FINDS THE BEST OF BRITISH ADVENTURERS
Gaydon 22 November 2002 Byron and Tim will now embark on gruelling training regimes before going head-to-head with one another at the International Selections event. With Eastnor Castle again as a backdrop, the event is set for the end of January 2003, and will see only one of the pair chosen to fly the flag for the UK in the Land Rover G4 Challenge itself. The Challenge starts in New York City on March 30th, and features competitors from 16 nations, whose physical agility, stamina and mental strength will be tested to the limit across four time zones and almost 4,000 km of stunning terrain. Tim, 39, is based on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides and runs his own business as an outdoor adventure sports instructor, trainer and small business advisor. His adventurous spirit has already led him into deep water – literally – when he was shipwrecked in a 90 ft sailing boat off the Azores. Dark-haired Byron, 38, who lives at the opposite end of the UK, in Taunton, Somerset, is a teacher with a penchant for adventure sports, having previously co-led a 450 km long kayak expedition to the north of the Arctic Circle! Both are delighted to have reached the final stage of the Land Rover G4 Challenge selection process. "I’m really excited to have been chosen," said Byron, "It’s just fantastic to think I have the opportunity to represent my country," Tim agreed: "The weekend was brilliant, really enjoyable, and we also learnt a lot about 4x4 driving techniques and driving responsibly off road. I’m over the moon to have been selected and I can’t wait for the next stage of the competition." Land Rover UK Managing Director, Mike Wright, commented: "I’d like to wish both Byron and Tim good luck for the next stage of the Land Rover G4 Challenge. To have got this far against such strong competition is a great achievement. I think everyone involved with the National Selections event was very impressed with the high calibre and up-for-it attitude of all the competitors." Although the UK competitors have now been selected, many of the other 16 participating nations have yet to choose the two applicants who will represent them at International Selections. DEMAG DELAVAL PUTS NISSAN ON PATROL DOWN THE MINE
14 November 2002 Siemens Demag Delaval Turbomachinery Ltd, a subsidiary of Siemens Power Generation which sells a number of industrial products to a variety of customers, has renewed its contract with Nissan to provide 4 x 4 vehicles for use in open cast mines throughout the UK. Currently the company looks after 13 Nissan Patrol GRs and one X-TRAIL that has just been delivered. As the existing vehicles need replacing, Siemens Demag Delaval has confirmed that they will be replaced with new Patrol GRs. Siemens Demag Delaval supplies excavators to the mining industry. It is responsible for installing and maintaining this equipment on site, and it is vital that its engineers have reliable transportation which can easily take them off road to work within the demanding mine environment. The durable 158 PS Nissan Patrol GR, with its powerful 3.0-litre direct injection engine and ability to tackle the toughest imaginable terrain with total confidence is tdeally suited to the job. Brigitte Laghuwitz, Senior Administrator/Fleet Manager for Siemens Demag Delaval said that the company had decided to use Nissan 3-4 years ago after they experienced reliability problems with their previous supplier. "We were impressed with Nissan's approach and products from the start. They provided a demonstration vehicle for a three month trial at an open cast mine and Nissan representatives visited the mine to study the vehicle in its working environment. At the end of the trial period, the Nissan representatives were confident that the Patrol GRs would be robust enough to cope with the very harsh conditions of life in the mines, and that Nissan could work alongside us to provide the level of service and support we need. "And that's exactly what they have done. We made the right decision by choosing Nissan, and have been very happy with the vehicles and the service Nissan has given us, which convinced us to replace our existing Patrol GRs with new ones. "The Nissan Patrol GR has proved better suited to our purpose and more reliable than the vehicles we used before, and we believe that the package Nissan offers is superior to those offered by other manufacturers." |
LAND ROVER PLEDGES SUPPORT TO LEADING CONSERVATIONISTS AT MOTOR SHOW ENVIRONMENT DAY
Warwick, 30 October 2002 - NEC, Birmingham, 30 October 2002 - Land Rover marked environment day at the British International Motor Show with the announcement of its support for two leading environmental organisations, the Born Free Foundation and Biosphere Expeditions. Land Rover has signed both as global sponsorship partners under its Fragile Earth policy, which is the company's commitment to the environment through the sponsorship of leading environmental organisations, the development of sustainable practices and technologies and the company's 'off-Road Code'. The Born Free Foundation is a charity inspired by the 1964 film, Born Free - the story of George and Joy Adamson played by Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna, who in 1984 established the charity which is now run by their son, Will Travers. Born Free operates from its UK base throughout the world with the aim of ‘keeping wildlife in the wild'. Current Born Free international projects include raising awareness and the conservation of the big cats of South America, Africa and Asia; the orca whales and polar bears of Canada; orphaned elephants in Sri Lanka; the great apes of Uganda and many more. In the UK their work concentrates on anti-captivity activity. Land Rover vehicles support the work of Born Free in many of these remote locations as a tool to access the wildlife that is in need. As part of its commitment to Born Free, Land Rover handed over an expedition-ready Discovery at the motor show, which will be used for the charity's operations in the UK. Other vehicles supplied are being shipped out to the Born Free Education and Rescue Centre at the Shamwari Game Reserve in South Africa - home to rescued lions and leopards from zoos, circuses and the pet shop trade. More vehicles are used in Kenya by the Youth for Conservation organisation which is a movement of unemployed local graduates that spots snares and captures poachers. Prior to Land Rover's involvement their work was done entirely on foot. Their first success with the vehicle was recorded just this week with the capture of two armed poachers on Mount Kenya. Actress, conservationist and Born Free patron, Amanda Holden who was at the Motor Show to collect the vehicle on the. charity's behalf, recently visited India on an expedition supported by Land Rover to place six tigers rescued from squalid conditions: in European 'attractions' into a sanctuary in their naltural habitat. She said: "Having visited some of India's remotest regions with our rescued tigers earlier this year, I can fully appreciate the value of Land Rover's versatile vehicles to the invaluable work Born Free does. It is also great to see these shining vehicles in all their glory with the expedition specification here amid the glamour of the motor show, my experience with Land Rovers has always been in their natural habitat - mud and desert dust." The company's other global sponsorship partner, Biosphere Expeditions is a not-for-profit organisation that takes people of all ages and from all walks of life and places them alongside scientists at the forefront of conservation work in some of the world's remotest regions.
Part of Land Rover's sponsorship of Biosphere Expeditions is the provision of vehicles to enable the expedition teams to reach the remote destinations in which they are required. The vehicles are used in the African Savannah in Namibia to monitor the rare Namibian Cheetah; in Central Asia's Altai Republic to survey snow leopards, manuls (a local big cat predator) and other aerial wildlife; and in the Ukraine and the Polish Carpathian mountains to snow-track and radio-track wolves. Accepting an expedition specification Defender 110 on behalf of Biosphere Expeditions, operations director, Katherine Wilden said: "Our Land Rovers enable us to take conservation expeditions to some of the most inhospitable and inaccessible places on Earth, and to support local scientists and conservation efforts with much needed and often invaluable vehicle back-up. They are an essential tool of our work." Land Rover UK managing director, Mike Wright added: "Our commitment to the environment is based on the belief that future generations should be able to enjoy, what we enjoy -in Land Rover' case this is the ability to explore and do good in the very far flung regions and terrains of the world. This 'spirit of adventure' can only be appreciated by future generations through the protection of the world's rarer inhabitants and landscapes - this is what Biosphere Expeditions and Born Free work to achieve, and that's why Land Rover is very proud to support their efforts." |
LAND ROVER TO SUPPORT CROSS COUNTRY RALLY TEAM
Warwick, 25 October 2002 - The Motor Sport days (1 and 2 November) at the British International Motor Show will see an exciting new shape, gracing the Land Rover stand in Hall 4 as the company annoupces its support of the Defender-bascd Bowler Wildcat in this year's season of FIA organised cross-country rallies. Bowler Off Road Ltd built their first vehicle, based on an 88-inch Land Rover chassis, in 1984 and the latest Bowler Wildcat dates from 2000. The 106-inch wheelbase Wildcat features a space frame chassis/roil cage fabricated from T45 tubing clad in stylish aluminium and composite panels designed to give easy access to the power train and equipment. The Bowler Wildcat uses Discovery front and rear axles, a custom suspension system following Land Rover design philosophy and is powered by a variety of Land Rover petrol and diesel engines. The vehicle being supported by Land Rover will carry full Land Rover livery and be powered by a modified 2.5 litre, 5-cylinder TdS engine developing 160 kW (215 bhp). The Land Rover supported vehicle will compete in a series of FIA organised cross-country rallies around the world. Featuring both amateur and works teams and with between 70 and 120 competitors the events take place in such diverse locations as France, Italy, Russia, United Arab Emirates and Australia. Commenting on the parnership, Matthew Taylor, Land Rover marketing director said: "While Defender is the iconic 4x4 utility vehicle, it also has a fun side. Our support of the Bowler team recognises the popularity of off-road sport and enables competitors to enjoy the more extreme end of the Land Rover experience in a managed and responsible manner. Drew Bowler, managing director of Bowler Off Road Ltd added: "With the Bowler Wildcat being based on the Land Rover Defender we are pleased to have official support from the company. Our vehicles are designed to compete in the toughest conditions and we use the best components available including the Land Rover V8 and Td5 engines. With Land Rover's help we are aiming to make our presence felt in this season's events and give competitors and spectators a thrill or two on the way." |
OFF-ROAD AMBULANCE FINDS FAVOUR IN THE FIELD
13 Nissan Patrol-based 4x4 ambulances have gone into service with St. John Ambulance Units across the UK, and a further two are joining the St. John Ambulance fleet this month. This state-of-the-art machine is the result of a 20-month joint project between Nissan, specialist bodybuilder A TT Papworth and St. John Ambulance, the UK's leading First Aid, Transport and Care Charity.
A number of NHS Authorities are now evaluating the vehicle, and North Wales Health Authority has already added one to its fleet. The members of the National Vehicle Policy and Guidelines Working Group at St. John Ambulance initiated the project. St John Ambulance volunteers regularly provide medical support for events held off-road, such as cross-country rallies and horse events, and there was a clear need for an ambulance which could reach areas not readily accessible by most vehicles. John Olsen, National Technical Product Manager for St. John Ambulance said: "At the start of the project we considered all the 4x4 options available. The ergonomics and rear space of the Nissan Patrol presented the best opportunity for a practical layout, and this, combined with the Patrol's strong performance and excellent off-road capabilities made it the ideal vehicle for our purposes." Based on the rugged 3.0-litre diesel 158PS long-wheel base Patrol GR, the 4x4 ambulance features a specially-designed four-section roof pod which allows full height headroom, extensive storage and rear access, giving medical personnel plenty of room in which to work and providing a good amount of space for patients. Specialist medical equipment on board meets the standards for all-terrain vehicles recently introduced. The Patrol's four-wheel drive system offers a choice of two-wheel drive (to the rear wheels only) for economical driving in normal road conditions, or four-wheel drive for more difficult terrain. Selection between two- and four-wheel drive modes can be made 'on the move' at speeds of up to 25mph. The original prototype was taken to St. John Ambulance locations around the UK last year and put through its paces by the charity's volunteers. 82% of those who tested it said it would be a welcome addition to the fleet, and this had proved to be the case since the vehicles joined the St. John Ambulance fleet in Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Kent, Lancashire, Leicestershire, Merseyside, Nottinghamshire, Suffolk and Wiltshire earlier this year. All those who are using it have given very positive feedback on the 'Challenger', as the ambulance is known in its St. John Ambulance livery. Dave Murfitt, Nissan's Fleet Sales Director said: "We were delighted to be able to work in partnership with St. John Ambulance and ATT Papworth to produce such an important vehicle, and look forward to seeing many more introduced into service both by St. John Ambulance and by UK Health Authorities." |
