ARC 2000 is over.... Well done Hants and Berks. See the Pictures and get the Results.
Note one radio handset is still missing, please check your vehicles
Tuesday, sunshine all day. Sad to see the site so empty. Sorting out all the payments, I had loads of money until all the bills came in! Sorting out the wooden stakes, packing up the tents, clearing the rubbish. I feel like a part timer, I was only on site from 1230 to 1900h! Some of the team seam to be working 23 hours a day! I am proud to have been a small part of the team that made ARC2000 possible. Well done Ashley and your management term, it is people like you that make all this possible. In the last week many problems have been encountered. Hard work from completly unpaid staff has resulted in a major competition having been concluded. It may not have been perfect but hell most people had a good time. I say again well done Hants and Berks and all the other helpers that made it possible
Monday, sunshine all day. Comp Safari was the main event to-day. I drove the course on Sunday with the film crew to look for good locations. It was a difficult course with lots of water, deep sand, sharp corners! The prize giving went well and Hants and Berks had a large cheer of thanks for the organisation of the event. I forgot to mention that at 2130h I got stuck in the 110 trying to go around the scenic drive and remove all the signs. Well despite being tired I got out the spade, worked out where I wanted the back wheels to go, and ten minutes later we were on our way.
Sunday, some rain to start then dry and windy for the rest of the day. The RTV and team recovery were the main events plus many minor events including the Concours, trailer reversing, gymkhana and dog show. There was a 101 in the concours that was so immaculately clean I do not know how it got there, unless it arrived in a big poly bag. The scenic drive was extreamly popular with lots of smiling faces and muddy vehicles at the end of it.
Saturday, the forcast was grim but after some early rain it was a beautiful sunny day. I had to dig for the sun cream by mid afternoon as my face was well pink.
Yes Saturdays rain made some of the camping fields muddy but there was a steady stream of day visitors flowing in and the scenic drive was producing lots of satisfied customers. I fortunately got the job mid afternoon of looking after the video cameraman. So I actually got out to see several stages of the CCV trail.
Friday started fine but was a bit wet in the afternoon and evening. Vehicles have been arriving in all day and settling themselves in. The beer tent was soon doing a thriving trade and I can recommend the ham and egg sandwiches available next to it. The scenic drive started well with a few minor mods to allow for changes to the comp areas as a result of a tank having a play. For military vehicle enthusiasts my lads counted over 20 abandoned military lorries, tanks and armoured personnel carriers littered about the area during the long drive around the three areas covered by the £10 scenic drive.
The opening ceremony was delayed slightly and low cloud prevented the parachute drop. Despite this the Liss Brass Band did a grand job of providing the fanfare for Nick Jennings and Ashley Pocock to declare the event open.
The club shop made a good start to clearing its stock of clothing and most of the trade stands were operational. (I am now £70 worse off than this morning). The DLR display of historic Landrovers is very good. Hunters have some nice new stock on show and Keith Gott had several not quite new vehicles on show. The clothing companies did well on waterproofs. I asked Goodyear about the new offroad tyre that it had on display, after several attempted phone calls they managed to find that it was not yet available in the UK, but it will be soon. Simmonites had loads of tyres on display and other stands had winches, wires, shocks, bits and pieces etc.
There are always unsung heros to events like this. Let it be said that lots of people were working very hard for a very long time today. Whether it be manning rally reception, directing traffic at the main gate, wiring the loudspeakers and generators, moving the loos, scrutineering the vehicles or setting out the stages or countless other jobs. It is hard slog. Well done everybody.
