X-TRAIL PLATINUM EDITION SHOWS ITS METAL

23 December 2011
Platinum is a special kind of metal, offering both beauty and toughness. It’s the inspiration behind a new special version of Nissan’s X-TRAIL4x4. As the name suggests, the new Platinum edition X-TRAIL is a real luxury item, with additional equipment not seen on any of the other models in the range and a touch more glamour too.

The front and rear of the vehicle gets extra protection and style with the fitment of additional protection plates located below the bumpers. The side is treated to chrome side steps and chrome door protection mouldings. On the inside the Platinum features leather upholstery and electrically-adjustable, heated front seats. A sophisticated new touch screen communication unit features satellite navigation, iPod connectivity and Bluetooth. To help protect your investment there’s also a reversing camera, with the image transmitted onto a small screen incorporated into the rear view mirror. Powering the Platinum is the X-TRAIL’s advanced 2.0dCi diesel engine with a choice of either manual or automatic transmissions. The manual produces a healthy 173PS and yet can return an average of 44.1mpg.

But unlike its precious inspiration, the X-TRAIL Platinum is not expensive. In fact it costs less than the Tekna version on which it’s based, starting at £29,180 for the manual and £30,560 for the automatic. Orders are now being taken now, but Platinum is a real rarity, with just 200 being produced.

TOYOTA HILUX WINS TOTAL 4X4 PICK-UP OF THE YEAR

21 December 2011
The Toyota Hilux has received another accolade, taking top honours in the pick-up category of the Total 4x4 awards. Renowned for its rugged go-anywhere performance, Hilux was the first car to be driven to both the South and Magnetic North Poles and has been tested in the world’s most extreme environments. Famed for its ultra-tough quality, Hilux is much more than just a workhorse. Today’s sixth generation of Toyota’s pick-up combines traditional robustness and excellent load-carrying capacity with comfort, safety and equipment features to make it a vehicle that ably bridges the divide between work and everyday driving needs.

Alan Kidd, Editor of Total 4x4 magazine said, “Hilux has always stood out in what is a very fiercely fought category. It's incredibly capable in every area and comes at a very appealing price. “The updates Toyota has made to it are subtle, but they're enough to nudge it back in front of the pack. In particular, its interior is much more modern and, without sacrificing anything in the way of refinement, the vehicle is tougher than ever. There's a lot of talent in the pick-up market, but once again Hilux is the one to beat.”

The latest version of Hilux is available in three bodystyles, single, extra and double cab, with a choice of 2.5 or 3.0-litre D-4D turbodiesel engines.

SUBARU FORESTER NAMED 4X4 OF THE YEAR

21 December 2011
The recently refreshed 2011 Subaru Forester has been named ‘4x4 of the Year’ by Britain’s best-selling off-roading magazine, 4x4. The go-anywhere, family friendly Forester, which is now available with a choice of extensively revised petrol and diesel Boxer engines, faced some stiff competition from the likes of a Range Rover Evoque, Porsche Cayenne and Skoda Yeti. However, thanks to its sure-footed Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive configuration, car-like driving dynamics and exceptional practicality, judges singled-out the Japanese crossover for the highest praise.

The panel of experts at 4x4 magazine said of the Forester: “Typically of Subaru, the Forester does very good things without making a fuss of it. The combination it offers of quality, value, practical usability and driving talent makes it very hard indeed to beat. “The Forester has always been a star in its own corner of the market, and heavily revised petrol and diesel engines means it now shines brighter than ever.” The 2.0-litre Boxer diesel Forester range, which returns an impressive 47.9 mpg combined, starts at £23,070 (on-the-road) for the entry-level 2.0D X, rising to £25,070 for the 2.0D XC, and £29,070 for the range-topping 2.0D XS NavPlus.

Customers preferring petrol power have a choice of two models – the Forester 2.0X and 2.0XS, costing £21,370 and £25,370 respectively in manual guise. Automatic versions are available at a £1,000 premium. For more information about the Forester or the rest of the sure-footed Subaru line-up, visit www.subaru.co.uk or to book a test drive call 08446 626 612. visit

GRAND CHEROKEE ENDS YEAR WITH MAJOR 4x4 AWARD

20 December 2011
The award-winning Jeep Grand Cherokee is finishing the year on a high – with a top industry accolade. The new luxury off-roader has just been crowned 4x4 of the Year by Total 4x4 magazine. With more than 30 international accolades from an array of opinion-leading organisations, the latest four-wheel drive Grand Cherokee is one of the most awarded SUVs ever. And with an impressive features list and more refinement than ever before, it’s no surprise that the 2,987cc V6 turbo diesel Grand Cherokee is top choice again.

The car’s comfort, equipment and technology all come in for praise from the Total 4x4 judging panel, and a special mention is made of the car’s practicality. “It’s good value by the standards of its competitors,” says Alan Kidd, editor, Total 4x4. “And there’s little at this price that does such a good job of combining comfort, equipment, dynamic prowess and relevant technology. “There have been four Grand Cherokees over the years and each one has improved on the last,” adds Alan Kidd. “But this time the step up has been off the scale. It’s a very worthy winner.” The Grand Cherokee also won the Awards’ Off-Roader category.

“Any award recognising our products is welcome, but to get the top prize is very good news,” says Nigel Land, brand director, Jeep Chrysler UK. “We’re proud of what Grand Cherokee has achieved for Jeep this year and we look forward to more great things from the brand in 2012.” The Jeep Grand Cherokee range starts at £36,795 for the 3.0 V6 CRD Limited, rising to £43,995 for the 3.0 V6 CRD Overland.

RANGE ROVER EVOQUE AWARDS TALLY PASSES THE HALF CENTURY

20 December 2011
The Range Rover Evoque has added more awards to its portfolio, taking the total to 53 since its recent launch in September this year. Recent honours bestowed on the Evoque came from Britain's 4x4 Magazine, which proclaimed the Evoque its 4x4 of the Year, and this was swiftly followed by the Car of the Year title from the Czech Republic, and Best SUV from the Brazilian automotive news agency Auto Press, taking to 15 the number of different countries to recognise the smallest, lightest and most efficient Range Rover ever produced.

Evoque's half-century tally includes notable titles such as Car of the Year in the UK AutoExpress New Car Honours, Scottish Car of the Year, US Motor Trend's SUV of the Year, BBC Top Gear's Car of the Year, Car and Driver Spain Car of the Year, the Design Trophy from l'Automobile in France and a host of honours from Chinese organisations and publications. For Land Rover global brand director John Edwards, keeping up with the awards is proving a welcome headache: "The speed with which the honours are being collected by the Evoque is breathtaking, as is their global nature. It is a fantastic achievement for all connected with the Evoque project and a great endorsement for the product. "In addition to these formal titles, the Evoque is daily emerging on top in motoring magazine group tests around the globe, and is winning thousands of admiring new owners. We have now received in excess of 40,000 orders for Evoque, and what is particularly heartening is that many of those have come from customers new to the brand."

The most recent British honour comes from 4x4 Magazine, whose editor Nigel Fryatt said that there was universal agreement among the judges "that the new Evoque points the way to what future 4x4s will be like, and in some respects that alone makes it a worthy winner." 4x4 Magazine also awarded Evoque top honours in its Premium Plus class.

SKODA YETI SCOOPS TWO CLASS WINS IN ‘4X4 OF THE YEAR’ AWARDS

19 December 2011
ŠKODA is revelling in a double dose of festive cheer after the Yeti was honoured by two respected specialist off-road magazines in their end-of-year awards. They bring the versatile SUV’s trophy haul to six for the year, and with UK sales up a third on 2010 it caps a remarkable 12 months for the Yeti. Again it has proved its credentials as a genuine mud-plugger that’s more than capable of tackling all that winter can throw at it.

4x4 Magazine

The ŠKODA Yeti secured class honours in 4x4 Magazine’s ‘4x4 Of The Year’ test. Now in its 22nd year, expert judges got behind the wheel of all the contenders in four categories of off-roader. They ranked the Yeti as number one in the Mid-Range class. Editor Nigel Fryatt said the Yeti fully deserved its trophy and hadsurprised many with its all-round abilities. “When you consider ‘fit for purpose’ and ‘value for money’, the Yeti is an impressive machine. The version with the full off-road electronic terrain options is more than capable of coping with conditions way in excess of what is likely to be attempted by potential owners – surely the creed of the true off-roader.”

Total 4x4 Magazine

In 2010 the ŠKODA Yeti won the Crossover category and went on to take the overall ‘4x4 Of The Year’ title. Now it’s beaten all-comers in the same category again, and scooped the magazine’s Special Award for Best Value. Editor Alan Kidd said the Yeti took the judging panel by surprise last year. “This year we were ready for it – but it still took our breath away. It’s brilliantly conceived and superbly built, good to drive on the road and it’ll do remarkable things in the rough. What’s not to love? There are very few 4x4s, at any price, that I’d be happier to see on my driveway.” With two weeks of trading left in 2011, sales of the ŠKODAYeti will hit close to 5,500 units. Following a total of 4,100 last year, this year has seen an increase of around 33 per cent. Robert Hazelwood, ŠKODA brand director, said the Yeti had had an astonishing year by any standards. “These two awards from the specialist 4x4 press are the icing on the cake for 2011. Their experts have put the Yeti through rigorous off-road tests as well as more traditional ones and I’m thrilled they appreciate the car’s strengths. The Yeti is an astonishingly versatile vehicle and there’s plenty more to come from it in 2012.”

JEEP WRANGLER IS 4X4 MAGAZINE’S ICON OF THE YEAR

16 December 2011
With its extraordinary tradition, and ability to reinvent itself again and again, the Jeep brand is internationally recognised as iconic. This is reaffirmed today in 4x4 Magazine’s 4x4 of the Year 2012 awards, where the Jeep Wrangler wins the Icon class. Now in its 22nd year, the magazine’s annual test of all the best four-wheel drive vehicles is a tough and comprehensive examination. But in the class categories the Wrangler proved top choice both for its off-road worthiness and its improvements in terms of comfort and refinement.

"Why is the Wrangler our Icons winner? Because once behind the wheel in the rough stuff, the Wrangler effortlessly confirms what makes a great off-roader,” says Nigel Fryatt, editor, 4x4 magazine. “Add that it's now civilised and comfortable to drive to the shops, and there really was no contest.” “The Jeep brand stands for freedom, adventure, authenticity, passion and uniqueness, and it always has done – that’s what makes it such an iconic badge,” says Nigel Land, brand director, Chrysler Jeep UK. “I am delighted that Wrangler has been recognised once again for its remarkable ability and longevity, especially when the award has come from a panel of off-road experts.”

Built on 70 years of legendary heritage, Jeep is the authentic SUV with versatility and class-leading capability for people who seek extraordinary journeys when driving in extreme terrain as well as in the city. The Jeep brand delivers an open invitation to live life to the fullest by offering a full range of vehicles that continue to provide owners with a sense of security to handle any journey with confidence. 2011 has been a special year for Jeep as it marks the brand’s 70th anniversary. Starting with the refreshed Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited, 2011 has also been the year of the new Jeep Grand Cherokee fitted with the all-new MultiJet II 3.0-litre turbo diesel engine, and the refreshed Jeep Compass compact SUV.

ACTOR CHRIS ELLISON TAKES DELIVERY OF NEW JEEP COMPASS

16 December 2011
One drive of the new Jeep Compass 4x4 was all it took, and TV and film actor Chris Ellison was hooked. Chris, best known as DCI Burnside in ITV’s The Bill but currently starring as Captain Hook in Peter Pan at the Harlow Playhouse, first saw the compact Sport Utility Vehicle when it was launched in the UK in April this year. And he was able to take delivery of his new car just two days before curtain up for his latest pantomime, earlier this month.

And delighted Chris says the comprehensively redesigned Compass has so far brought him nothing but Christmas cheer. “I ran a Jeep Cherokee about 10 years ago and was delighted with that, so when I saw the new Compass I fell in love,” says Chris. “I didn’t need anything as large as the Grand Cherokee, but I did want four wheel drive, so the Compass looked ideal. “And with the long road journeys to shows that I have to do, I was delighted to find it was available in diesel form, which keeps fuel costs down. It’s just fantastic.” Just like Peter Pan, the Jeep brand is iconic. Since Jeep vehicles were first produced in 1941, they have been the authentic benchmark for off-road capability, and the new Compass SUV builds on seven decades of legendary heritage to provide class-leading capability, craftsmanship and versatility.

The Jeep Compass range starts at £16,995 OTR, for the 2.0 Sport 4x2, rising to £23,675 OTR for the 2.2 CRD 70th Anniversary 4x4.

SORENTO WINS TOTAL 4X4 ACCOLADE FOR SECOND YEAR IN A ROW

16 December 2011
The Kia Sorento has been named as Total 4x4’s Best SUV for the second year in a row – beating off keen competition in a well-established segment. Editor Alan Kidd said: ‘The Sorento was our reigning champion in the full-size SUV class, and it impressed us every bit as much this year as last. Its style, poise, kit and practicality all score heavily in its favour.

‘Make no mistake, this award wasn’t about just being cheap. The Sorento beat a long list of premium opponents because it’s very good at everything that matters. Its bargain price and unbeatable seven year warranty merely seal the deal.’ The latest version of Kia’s full-size 4x4 Sorento was launched in the UK in February 2010 and immediately impressed the Total 4x4 team. It remains the flagship of the Kia range and is available in two and four wheel drive versions – but it is the full-time four wheel drive model that again impressed the Total 4x4 judges to retain its Best SUV crown.

Michael Cole, Managing Director of Kia Motors (UK) Ltd., said “From the day of its launch we knew that the latest Sorento continued the car’s impressive record of delivering excellent go-anywhere ability coupled with on-road sophistication at a great value price. Sorento has been a long-time favourite in the Kia range and its popularity amongst a wide variety of customers – from those who want on-road towing security or all-weather ability to the more adventurous owner who needs to head away from the main roads. “I am delighted that Total 4x4 has again awarded Sorento its Best SUV accolade – especially in the face of so much impressive competition in what remains a hard-fought sector of the market,” he added.

AA ENDORSES SUBARU WINTER-WEATHER TOWING TIPS

14 December 2011
With Britain poised to succumb to winter’s icy grip for another year, owners of All-Wheel Drive Subaru vehicles will once again be called upon to become motoring Good Samaritans – rescuing friends, neighbours and fellow motorists stranded in the ice and snow. In response to the increasingly bleak forecasts, Subaru – backed by the AA – is providing its customers with practical tips on how they can use their trusty Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive vehicles to tow snow-bound front and rear-wheel-drive cars out of trouble, safely and efficiently.

The AA-endorsed winter-specific towing tips (see below) include guidance on driving techniques and the use of equipment. For example, Subaru advises drivers to check that the transmission of the towed vehicle is left in neutral, that the steering wheel is not locked, and that its front wheels are pointing in the planned direction of travel (it can be very hard to tell when behind the wheel in deep snow). AA patrol of the year, Keith Miller, commented: “On the road, traction is key at any time but never more so than during winter, when the roads are often slippery. In these conditions, All-Wheel Drive is always better than front or rear-drive, as it reduces the risk of wheel spin and maximises control of the vehicle. “This in turn aids those towing other motorists out of trouble by helping to keep things smooth,” Miller continued. “It’s important not to let the rope snatch – move off gently so the rope takes up the tension gradually.”

Miller also stressed the importance of “protecting the scene”, by being aware of your surroundings. For example, he explained, if you’re trying to pull a vehicle out of a ditch at the bottom of a hill make sure you can take evasive action if other cars coming down the hill lose control. He added that even All-Wheel Drive vehicles benefit from the fitment of winter tyres: “Particularly if you live in a rural area, consider fitting a set of four for significantly better winter handling.” Subaru owners interested in fitting winter-proof rubber to their car can visit www.subaru.co.uk/dealer-locator to find their nearest retailer. Subaru’s full model range – Legacy, Outback, Forester, WRX STI and Impreza – is equipped with the company’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system that directs power to all four wheels, optimising traction in the very harshest winter conditions. Many Subarus also feature Vehicle Dynamic Control, which manages torque distribution, engine output and brakes at each wheel, making adjustments instantaneously when grip levels are reduced in order to keep the vehicle on the chosen course. Marketing Director of Subaru UK, Kenyon Neads, said: “I helped rescue a snow-bound neighbour in a German rear-wheel-drive vehicle last year, and we know many of our customers will find themselves in similar situations as soon as the snow falls. We know our customers have less to fear than most from the snow and ice that winter brings, but we want to help them respond to appeals for rescue in the safest way possible.”

LAND ROVER CELEBRATES 50 YEARS AT EASTNOR CASTLE

13 December 2011
Land Rover is celebrating 50 years of using the Eastnor Castle estate in Herefordshire as its centre for off road testing and development. Tucked away in rural Herefordshire, this historic piece of English countryside is still an important tool in the research and development of new Land Rovers as well as offering a completely unique Land Rover driving experience to members of the public. In 1961, Land Rover first chose the 500 acre Eastnor Castle estate located near Ledbury, Herefordshire to assess the off-road credentials of their vehicles. Half a century on, the tradition continues, with Eastnor playing a pivotal role in the research and development of Land Rover's outstanding all-round capability and class-leading off road performance.

As well as the cars themselves, Eastnor has been instrumental in developing an impressive collection of Land Rover technologies; such as Anti-lock Brakes, Adjustable Air Suspension, Electronic Traction Control, Hill Descent Control and Terrain Response® – many of which were world firsts in the 4x4 sector. The tradition of testing all Land Rover models at Eastnor continues to this day. The Range Rover Evoque was the most recent model to complete its off-road apprenticeship and a large part of the Evoque’s technology, including MagneRide™, was proven on the estate, where ride dampers were tested extensively. Terrain Response® offers drivers optimal vehicle set-up (electronic and mechanical), and performance, under a variety of off-road conditions. Whether driving in mud, ruts, rocks, sand, grass, gravel or snow, Terrain Response® has the appropriate setting, and will optimise ride height, engine torque Response®, Hill Decent Control, Electronic Traction Control and transmission settings, ensuring a safe and controlled passage across any terrain. The Eastnor estate provides the ultimate test for all these conditions and is instrumental in the continuing development of this technology.

Eastnor has been used as not only an ideal off-road engineering ground, but since 1989, as an off-road learning centre for the emergency services, explorers, humanitarian societies such as the Red Cross and, more recently, the general public. Customers and fans of the brand can now book drive experience days to hone their on and off-road driving skills with tuition from a team of highly qualified Land Rover Experience instructors. Eastnor is one of over 30 centres around the world, and hosts over five and a half thousand visitors every year participating in half or full days, beginner and intermediate training as well as exciting night drives. Over a third of these visitors have travelled from overseas, keen to experience Land Rover in its heartland.

TOYOTA LAND CRUISER STILL THE NATION’S BEST AT 60

7 December 2011
Mighty SUV commands the market’s best residual values in 2011

The Toyota Land Cruiser has rounded off its 60th anniversary in style by being declared the year’s top performer in terms of residual value. Glass’s Guide has calculated Toyota’s mighty SUV has held its worth better than any other UK model in 2011, revealing that a 2008 (57 plate) 3.0-litre D-4D Invincible automatic can still command 72.2 per cent of its original on-the-road price. The top 10 compiled for the year-end would also have included several other Land Cruiser models, had the list not been limited to the highest-ranked example from each model range.

Adrian Rushmore managing editor of Glass’s Guide, said: “The Toyota Land Cruiser has never been a victim of distress marketing by the manufacturer and this has ensured used examples have been in very limited supply. It enjoys the credentials of being a durable and reliable workhorse, an image that has endured for many years.” Land Cruiser has forged its reputation for exceptional strength and lasting quality in the world’s toughest environments. The latest versions of the model remains true to the rugged principles that defined its earliest “ancestors”, while making full use of advanced technologies to deliver even better off-road performance, safety and handling.

RANGE ROVER EVOQUE IS BBC TOPGEAR MAGAZINE CAR OF THE YEAR

30 November 2011
BBC TopGear Magazine has named the new Range Rover Evoque as their 2011 Car of the Year. The Evoque came top in the SUV category of the annual awards and was also picked by TopGear TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson as his favourite new car this year. The Evoque beat stiff competition from the BMW 1 Series M, Mclaren MP4 12c, Ferrari FF, VW Up! and Kia Picanto to scoop the coveted Car of the Year title. The awards are officially announced in the December issue of BBC TopGear Magazine, which is on sale in the UK now. With 29 international editions, BBC TopGear is read by an estimated 12 million people worldwide.

To celebrate the award, TopGear took a Range Rover Evoque on an African adventure through the souks, deserts and mountain passes of Morocco to fully experience the superb all-round capability and outstanding performance offered by this year's winning car. The full story is featured alongside the Car of the Year Awards in all 29 international editions of the magazine. The judging panel, headed up by BBC TopGear Magazine Editor-in-Chief, Charlie Turner, comprised members of the magazine's editorial and road testing team, together with the three TopGear TV presenters, Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond. Commenting on the awards, Turner said: "Judging the TopGear Magazine cars of the year takes a lot of time, coffee and shouting. But, strangely, when it came to the choosing the overall winner, the yelling softened to agreement. Universal approval from the most opinionated minds in the industry is almost unheard of. Which gives you some idea of just how good the Range Rover Evoque, TopGear’s 2011 Car of the Year, really is."

As well as triumphing in the SUV and overall Car of the Year categories, the Evoque was also chosen by presenter Jeremy Clarkson as his personal choice for Car of the Year. Summing up his decision, he says:"There have been many great cars launched over the last 12 months....But these are just one-trick ponies. The Evoque is more than that. Its a pony that is also a racehorse, a shire horse, a dray horse, a show jumper and an easy rosette-winner in the dressage competition. Its brilliant. And its the Top Gear Car of the Year." The Top Gear Award represents the 34th international award for the Range Rover Evoque since its launch earlier this year. Land Rover Global Brand Director, John Edwards, welcomed the news saying: "The Range Rover Evoque has generated an unprecedented response in all of our global markets and has been particularly successful in attracting new customers to the Land Rover brand. The TopGear Car of the Year award is further recognition that the Evoque offers a unique combination of distinctive premium design and outstanding performance underpinned by Land Rover's legendary all terrain capability. The car's success is testament to the skill and commitment of the design and engineering teams in delivering a vehicle that meets the original product vision.

The TopGear Magazine Award is certainly one of the most coveted titles in the industry and we are naturally extremely pleased and excited that Evoque has been crowned overall Car of the Year 2011." The Range Rover Evoque has been on sale in the UK since September and is available in two body styles (five door or coupé), with a number of engine and transmission combinations. The Evoque also offers the opportunity for a high level of personalisation with three distinct design themes and a wide range of options, accessories and colour choice. The Evoque has this month also been recognised by a number of external industry bodies in the UK including Euro NCAP, who awarded a 5* safety rating and Glass's and CAP Monitor who have predicted outstanding residual values. The Vehicle Certification Agency has also awarded the Evoque LCA certification for the comprehensive lifecycle analysis study carried out by Land Rover's environment and sustainability team.

LAND ROVER ACHIEVES ENVIRONMENTAL CERTIFICATION FOR RANGE ROVER EVOQUE

30 November 2011
Land Rover has received certification from the VCA (Vehicle Certification Agency) for a comprehensive 'cradle-to-grave' study which analyses the environmental impact of its new Range Rover Evoque. This is the first time that Land Rover has received VCA approval following a detailed life cycle study. The life cycle assessment (LCA) of the Range Rover Evoque was fully audited and approved by the VCA, making Land Rover one of only a few vehicle manufacturers to have completed an officially recognised study of the environmental

impact of a vehicle – from manufacturing, through a lifetime of customer use, to ultimate disposal and recycling. The report highlights many of the processes that make the Range Rover Evoque the brand's lightest and most efficient vehicle to date. These include the use of recycled materials, lightweight components and stop start technology. The cradle-to-grave study also highlights sustainability measures that have been built into the manufacturing process such as such as the installation in the Paint Shop of the latest generation of fully flexible paint application equipment for Evoque's contrast roof option, thus reducing paint consumption and solvent emissions. In addition, the ventilation systems in body construction have been rationalised, giving a 25% reduction in electricity consumption.

The certificate was awarded by Paul Markwick, VCA CEO, at a ceremony at Jaguar Land Rover's (JLR's) Gaydon engineering facility. Mr Markwick said, “I’m very pleased to have presented this certificate to the team at Land Rover. Operating in a sustainable way and producing products that reflect this ethos is clearly a very important part of business. Initiatives such as Life Cycle Assessment provide a framework that allows industry to assess the environmental impacts of a product from concept through to the end of vehicle life." "VCA has been supporting the automotive industry with its certification needs globally for approaching 40 years and there is no doubt that this extensive knowledge of the sector means that our audit teams understand the complexities of the vehicle design and construction process and the legislation supporting this.”

REXTON RETURNS WITH EVEN GREATER SSANGYONG VALUE, QUALITY AND SPECIFICATION

30 November 2011
Internationally renowned, Korean 4x4 specialist SsangYong has a rich history of creating robust off road vehicles. The Rexton is no exception, placing true go anywhere ability at the centre of its rugged appeal. Solidly built, Rexton can tackle the toughest terrain while also providing an impressive 3.2 tonne towing capability. When drivers need to haul their horsebox, caravan, boat or trailer with confidence and in safety, Rexton really proves its mettle whatever the weather or conditions. Practicality is also at the heart of the Rexton. All models are fitted with seven seats as standard, while the 4x4 offers generous space for up to 1,338 litres of luggage.

While rivals offering the same level of durability come with a much higher price tag, the SsangYong provides superb value. Available from only £19,995, Rexton is powered by an advanced 2.7 litre five cylinder turbo diesel engine. Delivering a power output of 163bhp, it provides 340Nm of torque from only 1,800rpm. What’s more, a torque on demand four wheel drive system is standard on all variants, distributing the pulling power to the axle that needs it most and ensuring the best possible traction at all times.

When the going gets really tough the driver can select low range which also splits the torque equally between front and rear axles to provide enough all round traction to handle the most difficult terrain. Rexton is available in a choice of S and EX trim. The entry level S model comes equipped with ABS, EBD and ESP, as well as automatic climate control and seven seats. Move up to EX specification and leather upholstery, heated seats and a Mercedes-Benz five speed T-Tronic automatic are included as standard.

LAND ROVER'S 'GO BEYOND' BURSARY 2012 LAUNCH AT ROYAL GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY (WITH IBG)

21 November 2011
The 'Go Beyond' Bursary 2012 was officially launched at the annual Explore weekend of the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), one of Land Rover's six Global Humanitarian and Conservation Partners, on Friday 18 Nov 2011. The Land Rover ‘Go Beyond’ Bursary is run by the Society, on behalf of Land Rover, offering funding and the use of a Defender 110 vehicle. The award is aimed at those who want to take a journey beyond their limits and boundaries, that offers challenges for the team and for which a Land Rover Defender 110 is an integral part of the expedition.

Mark Cameron, Global Brand Extension Director for Land Rover said; "It gives me great pleasure, in not only announcing the launch of the 'Go Beyond' Bursary 2012, but for the first time, to announce the trebling of the total amount of Land Rover funding. "Hopefully, this will enable the winning Bursary team to match the vehicles' 'Go Anywhere' philosophy and allow them to adventure further afield than ever before." Paul Rose, Vice President of Expeditions & Fieldwork, RGS-IBG added; "The Land Rover 'Go Beyond’ Bursary offers recipients an amazing opportunity to take a journey to promote a wider understanding and enjoyment of people, places and environments. " "With the use of a Land Rover Defender 110, you can really get off the beaten track and make the most of the vehicle’s capabilities in remote terrain and in demanding environments, helping to turn ideas for challenging and inspiring geographical journeys into a reality."

The journey may connect the team with schools, local communities or projects but, whatever its aim, the team will be expected to inspire and engage others, both from the field and on return. A bursary of £15,000 is available and in addition applicants can apply for a discretionary fund of up to £15,000 to support essential expedition-related costs. The application deadline is 3 February 2012 and interviews will take place in London, in March 2012. Past 'Go Beyond' Bursary winners Atlantic Rising (2009) were present at the launch of the Explore weekend on the Friday evening, giving a lecture to prospective Bursary applicants and the Glacier in the Greenhouse (2011) team were presenting on the Saturday afternoon. Land Rover Experience (LRE) also had a presence, with Sarah Batten (LRE Lead Instructor) providing sound expert advice in the 'Vehicle Dependent Expeditions' workshop and the LRE stand offering guidance and tips for potential explorers. JEEP ON TOUR WITH THE NORTH FACE EUROPEAN SPEAKER SERIES

18 November 2011
Jeep has established a new partnership in Europe with The North Face, the world’s premier supplier of outdoor clothing, equipment and footwear. And last night (17 November), the 4x4 manufacturer marked the agreement by sponsoring The North Face Speaker Series 2011, one of an exclusive group of events taking place during November in five countries around Europe.

Celebrating the extraordinary record-breaking first winter ascent of the 26,362ft Gasherbrum II (GII) in Pakistan, The North Face Speaker Series brings together expedition team Simone Moro, Denis Urubko and Cory Richards to share their personal stories of the 37-day, 2011 winter expedition, live on stage. The intrepid climbers recounted tales of unimaginable extreme conditions such as minus 46° temperatures, blizzards and fierce winds, and recalled how they survived an enormous avalanche on the precarious descent back to base camp. This inspirational story was vividly brought to life with an exclusive film and unique photo gallery – all digitally shot by Cory Richards.

The UK ‘leg’ of the Speaker Series took place at the Royal Institute of Great Britain, London, where a rugged new Jeep Wrangler was on display for viewing by the event’s audience. The four other European cities on the tour are Turin, Barcelona, Moscow and Munich. The role as supporting sponsor of the North Face Speaker Series allows Jeep to further strengthen its commitment to the world of action sports and confirms the ‘Go Anywhere, Do Anything’ ability of the brand, especially the iconic Jeep Wrangler. “The athletes from The North Face team perfectly embody the values ??of freedom, adventure, authenticity, passion and uniqueness that are part of the Jeep DNA,” says Nigel Land, brand director, Chrysler Jeep UK. “And we were delighted to support this remarkable night in London.”

LAND ROVER DC100 AND DC100 SPORT CONCEPTS MAKE NORTH AMERICAN DEBUT AT LOS ANGELES AUTO SHOW

14 November 2011
Land Rover’s DC100 and DC100 Sport concepts investigate the potential design direction for a replacement for the iconic Defender. They will make their North American debut at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show on 16th November 2011. Land Rover is taking these concepts to North America to gauge reaction and explore the possibility of bringing the Defender back to the US market. John Edwards, Land Rover Global Brand Director said: "The Defender has always been at the heart of the Land Rover Brand and single-handedly defines our go-anywhere, can-do sprit. Our ambition is to create an all new Defender for a global market that remains absolutely faithfully to its original DNA: tough, versatile, durable and capable. At the same time, it will be developed for the 21st century and adaptable for the needs of future generations.

"Our intention is to introduce the all new Defender in the middle of the decade - there's a lot of work to do to meet these dates and our concepts are just the start of the journey. We are here in LA to showcase our DC100 and DC100 Sport concepts and start to actively explore the possibility of bringing the future Defender to North America." Capturing the rugged, dependable and adventurous spirit of the original, the DC100 concepts are intended to showcase the potential breath of capability for the future Defender family. Evolved since their unveiling at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2011, the concepts now ride on optimised off-road 20-inch alloy wheels shod with Cooper all-terrain tyres. The DC100 also features expedition accessories with a raised air-intake 'snorkel' for wading and a roof rack. Finished in the Land Rover signature combination of 'Heritage Blue' paint with a Candy Weiss white roof, the DC100 reinvents the essential Defender design cues for the 21st century. These include short overhangs for extreme approach and departure angles, vertical panels, an upright windscreen and strong shoulder line for visibility and ease of positioning and, of course, the honest Defender 'face' with its signature round lamps and prominent grille, incorporating a winch.

The DC100 Sport takes all these key design cues and adds to them the spirit of freedom first embodied by the early canvas-roofed Land Rovers with their fold-down windscreens to create a concept bursting with California cool. CoreLandRover attributes of capability and versatility are underpinned in both concepts by a suite of innovative off-road technological aids that reduce the workload on the driver. Foremost of these is the next generation of Land Rover's acclaimed Terrain Response system which will optimise the car for any conditions without driver pre-selection. In addition, a new Terrain-i system creates an intelligent map of the topography in front of the car and displays it as a 3D visualisation. Terrain-i automatically identifies potential hazards and suggests alternative routes. In urban environments the same system is able to identify pedestrians and hazards with great accuracy. A new Wade Aid system utilises sonar sensors mounted in the bumpers and wing mirrors to measure water depth. As with Terrain Response, Wade Aid will optimise the car for water crossings by closing body vents, raising the ride height, selecting a low gear and advising on the safest speed. Sustainability has always been a Land Rover hallmark – more than three-quarters of the almost two million Defenders made are still doing regular duty – and the DC100 concepts extend this commitment with new technologies that will reduce their environmental impact. The first is an intelligent Twin-Solenoid Stop/Start system mated to the latest eight-speed automatic gearbox, both of which have been designed with future hybridisation in mind. Second is the unique Driveline Disconnect system, which sends power to the front-axle only unless conditions demand all-wheel drive. Unlike conventional systems, this physically, rather than electronically, decouples the rear-axle to reduce friction losses but can re-engage drive almost instantaneously.

LAND ROVER CELEBRATES 8TH ANNIVERSARY WITH CHINA EXPLORATION & RESEARCH SOCIETY (CERS)

14 November 2011
The Land Rover In Action Exhibition week (14 – 18 Nov 2011) at the prestigious Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) in London will coincide with Land Rover's 8th Anniversary with China Exploration & Research Society (CERS), one of Land Rover's six Global Humanitarian and Conservation Partners. Together with Land Rover, the partnership with China's 'greatest living explorer' and fellow of the Royal Geographical Society – Wong How Man, has expanded his exploration work to conservation of some of China’s most endangered natural and cultural heritage. Wong famously led CERS expeditions that pinpointed the sources of the Yangtze (2005), the Mekong (2007) and the Yellow River (2008).

In 2011, the focus of CERS' summer expedition was to reach the Salween River source, a geographic undertaking that has evaded geographers and scientists for decades. Despite immense difficulties and setbacks, including a sudden and bitter snow storm at the height of summer, the CERS team reached the source on 14 June. CERS' latest wildlife projects include researching the Tibetan Antelope calving ground at the Arjin Mountain Nature Reserve, an extremely remote region of Xinjiang, fringing upon the Tibetan plateau, as well as the rare and exotic breeds of; the Asiatic Beaver, Wild Yak, Black-necked Crane and Musk Deer. The CERS' caving teams were also recently featured on a CCTV 10 Beijing, a major state television science channel, for discovering of a new species of cave-dwelling blind fish and there are plans for four further caving expeditions in 2012. This week CCTV Channel 12 primetime will be airing three new half-hour episodes on a variety of CERS' projects and expanding into full-hour slots for three episodes in 2012.

Cultural preservation is another focus for CERS and the teams have preserved 15 traditional thatch-roofed houses of the Li minority people of Hainan Island in southern China, in support of the Lisu Hill Tribe community, as well as successfully saving one of the world's last remaining timber courtyard houses of the Lisu hunting/collecting tribe of remote Yunnan Province in southwest China. Their future plans will include beekeeping research, a pressing issue worldwide. Wong How Man, Founder of CERS and world-renowned explorer said: "CERS takes on multiple expeditions and projects throughout the year with a large, diverse team from around the world. For our explorers and scientists, Land Rover not only provides a means of transportation through some of the most difficult and inhospitable terrains on this planet, but also act as an essential shelter in the world's most extreme weather conditions along the way." Bob Grace, President JLR China added: “We are proud of Land Rover’s achievements in preservation of fragile environments and endangered wildlife around the globe. In China, we are glad to work with China Exploration and Research Society to bring our philosophy in sustainability to the local community. For the future, we will continue to expand the scope of our care for nature and continuously reinforce the commitment to making our environment better.” The Land Rover In Action Exhibition will feature the work of Land Rover's six Global Humanitarian & Conservation Partners; International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Born Free Foundation, Biosphere Expeditions, China Exploration & Research Society (CERS), Earthwatch Institute and Royal Geographical Society (with IBG).

3 November 2011
The new Range Rover Evoque has been named Stuff Magazine's 2011 Car of the Year in the annual technology award ceremony held at London's Globe Theatre last night. The Evoque, which went on sale in the UK in September, has already tallied up 23 international awards. The new Range Rover fought off stiff competition from the Ferrari FF, Ford Focus, Renault Twizy, Nissan Leaf and Mini Coupe in the Stuff Car of the Year category. The editorial team considered the six entrants based on a combination of technology, design and style, on which the Evoque excelled on all fronts.

Scoring top honours, the Range Rover Evoque was chosen as the outright winner in the car of the year category due to its class leading technology, exhibiting novel features such as Terrain ResponseTM providing all weather, all surface capability and Adaptive DynamicsTM with MagnarideTM giving an ever compliant ride. The judges consisting of the Stuff Magazine editorial team, with consultation from industry experts at Autocar, also praised Land Rover's cutting edge Dual ScreenTM technology permitting the driver and passenger to see two different images on the same screen at the same time. The Evoque was also commended for its 825W Meridian audio system which is the first example of the collaboration between the two British marques.

Speaking at the award ceremony, Stuff Magazine Editor, Will Findlater, said: "For combining the off-road capabilities of a Range Rover and leading technology with the desirability of a Blade Runner space car, the Range Rover Evoque just had to win it for us." Land Rover Design Studio Director, David Saddington collected the award and said: "The Stuff Gadget Award means a lot to us at Land Rover and it is fantastic to win Stuff Magazine's inaugural Car of the Year Award. I am really happy to pick it up on behalf of the entire Land Rover team who put so much hard work into the design and engineering – it is great to be recognised for leading edge and innovative technology wrapped in such a fantastic design."

ALL-NEW FORD RANGER DELIVERS A REFINED RIDE, CONFIDENT HANDLING AND QUIET INTERIOR

26 October 2011
The all-new global Ford Ranger may boast proven pickup truck toughness and capability, but this means tough, not rough. With a brand-new chassis, steering system and suspension, Ranger offers a smooth and quiet ride, car-like comfort, as well as precise steering. Ranger is rare in the pickup segment by prioritising driving dynamics as a core product quality and its chassis engineers have delivered a pickup that is agile, stable, precise and comfortable.

Among the highlights of the chassis is an all-new frame that is longer and stiffer, and has been engineered to get the job done, day in and day out. Along with new front and rear suspension, it enables a more refined ride and quiet cabin environment. Ford has also introduced a new rack-and-pinion steering system in the all-new Ranger for more accurate steering control. To further enhance ride comfort, engineers inserted hydro mounts on Ranger’s frame between the rail and cabin. Constructed of hard rubber and filled with hydraulic fluid, these help to isolate vertical and horizontal motions more effectively, reducing cabin shake and leading to a more pleasing ride overall.

“The result is a tough pickup truck that provides the best possible road manners,” said John Tatge, Ford Ranger chief program engineer. “For traditional pickup buyers, the benefits are huge with no compromises in payload capacity or towing ability. For customers coming from other segments who expect smoother, more refined road handling, the all-new Ranger delivers with less of the harshness typically found in pickups.”

EVOQUE NAMED SCOTTISH CAR OF THE YEAR 2011

14 October 2011
Range Rover's stunning Evoque has won the top motoring accolade at the 2011 Scottish Car of the Year Awards. The Evoque drove off with the prestigious Scottish Car of the Year title at a gala dinner held in Glasgow's Thistle Hotel on Friday evening. The audience of over 200 was made up of people drawn from all aspects of the motoring industry plus members of the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers who select the winner. To win the overall title, the Liverpool-built Evoque had first to win its own category and then defeat tough opposition from the other 11 category winners in a final vote. This year the category winners were drawn from the following -- Small, Family, Estate, Executive, MPV, SUV/Crossover, Drop Top, Diesel, Sporting, Electric and Eco. Competition was strong right across the board and very tight in the Small category where the excellent Kia Picanto came out on top ahead of the second placed Audi A1. The fine new Ford Focus was the runaway winner of the Family car sector with the Peugeot 508 having to settle for second place. The Estate sector was won by the all-new Hyundai i40 with Peugeot again taking second place with their 508 SW.

There was another close contest in the Executive sector where the Audi A7 came out on top just ahead of the Volvo V60. The MPV category had a very clear winner with the superb Seat Alhambra winning comfortably with the Ford C-MAX in second place. The Range Rover Evoque won the SUV/Crossover category by a large margin ahead of the BMW X3 which finished in second spot. In the Drop Top section the VW Golf emerged as the winner despite some very expensive opposition from BMW and Audi. The BMW 6-Series was second. The diesel section is always hotly contested and this year's winner is Jaguar's XF 2.2d with Volvo's V60 DRIVe in second spot. The Sporting category was won by Jaguar's XKR-S with the BMW 1 Series M Coupe in second place. Peugeot's iON took the first ever Electric category award beating the Nissan Leaf into second place. The Eco category was very tough this year with the frugal Seat Ibiza Ecomotive taking the title ahead of the Fiat 500 Twinair. In addition to the category winners, the ASMW praised the IAM’s proactive contribution towards road safety, naming the organisation as recipient of its Safety award.

The awards, held in the ASMW’s 50th anniversary year, also recognised a great British design icon. To mark the occasion, members voted for their most iconic car launched since the group’s inception with the Jaguar E-Type winning the Bridge of Weir Leather Company sponsored accolade. John Murdoch, President of the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers commented: "Some superb new cars entered the market during the past 12 months and our members had a tough time selecting the category winners. Manufacturers are responding to market challenges and continue to provide improvements in safety, emissions and economy at an astonishing rate. "One car stood out from all the others with its stylish good looks, sound packaging, fine driving dynamics and desirability and the Range Rover Evoque is a worthy winner of the Scottish Car of the Year title. With 18,000 advanced orders already in the bag it will provide job security for hundreds of people and generate huge exports for the British economy." Colin Green, Land Rover UK Managing Director said: "We are absolutely delighted that the Range Rover Evoque is the 2011 Scottish Car of the Year - undoubtedly one of the most important accolades in the industry. On behalf of everyone at Land Rover, I would like to thank the Association for the award and for recognising that the Evoque is the most exciting car to be driven on Scottish roads this year." John Edwards, Global Brand Director, Land Rover, added: "We are all very proud to see the Range Rover Evoque win the Scottish Car of the Year title. The Evoque is the result of a real team effort - Design, Product Development, Manufacturing and Marketing worked together with other functions across the company to create a truly unique, exciting and altogether outstanding new vehicle." Land Rover is no stranger to awards north of the border. Its Discovery 4 received the top honours in 2009 while the Freelander 2 won its category shortly after launch in 2006.

21 September 2011
ŠKODA UK will continue as Official Vehicle Supplier to the RACMSA Rally of Scotland for a third consecutive year, when the penultimate round of the 2011 Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) takes place next month (7-9 October). ŠKODA UK will supply a fleet of four-wheel drive Yetis, Octavia Scouts and Superbs to transport VIPs and rally officials from stage to stage, while Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles will supply vehicles to carry all the essential rally equipment around the route – such as the timing systems and control points.

ŠKODA also aims to continue its unbroken winning record on the event, having won both previously held Rally of Scotland events in 2009 and 2010. This year, ŠKODA UK Motorsport is hoping that Andreas Mikkelsen and co-driver Ola Fløene will finish on the top step of the podium – having finished 2nd to JuhoHänninen (ŠKODA Motorsport) last year. Robert Hazelwood, Director of ŠKODA UK, said: “We are delighted to continue our involvement with the RACMSA Rally of Scotland by supplying vehicles to the rally officials for a third year in a row. We’ve had a very successful association with our home round of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge, and we’re confident that our four-wheel drive road vehicles, as well as our Fabia S2000 rally car, will once again impress fans in the Scottish forests. We’re greatly looking forward to this year’s Rally of Scotland, where our one hundred and ten years of ŠKODA in motorsport celebrations will continue.” Andrew Coe, Chief Executive of Rally of Scotland organiser International Motor Sports, commented: "We are once again delighted to welcome ŠKODA UK as the Official Vehicle Supplier to the 2011 RACMSA Rally of Scotland. Its support since 2009 has been terrific and it is the sort of highly enthusiastic and pro-active partner that any international sporting event – not just in motor sport – would love to have.

“Its Yeti, Octavia and Superb models perfectly suit the requirements of our VIPs and officials in enabling them to cover the event’s road mileage in between stages and then the more rugged terrain on the approach to them efficiently, practically and in both comfort and style. “In the IRC, its Fabia S2000 model has of course been the car to beat with victories in six of the right rounds so far, whileŠKODA drivers also fill the top three places in the IRC table. We very much look forward to seeing if ŠKODA – in particular its UK Motorsport Fabia driven by Andreas Mikkelsen – can win Rally of Scotland for the third year in a row.” This year’s Rally of Scotland (7-9 October) will get under way on the Friday afternoon (7 October) with a Ceremonial Start at Stirling Castle before the event’s opening two competitive timed stages held in the dark of night around Carron Reservoir in Stirlingshire. The event will then move into Perthshire on the Saturday (8 October), taking in classic stages such as Craigvinean, Drummond Hill and Errochty before a return on the Sunday (9 October) to Stirlingshire for another run through Carron Valley prior to two new tests, Loch Chon and the giant 16.15 mile (26km) High Corrie that will each be tackled twice. The Rally will then finish late afternoon on the Sunday with its two short final stages through the majestic grounds of Scone Palace near Perth – also the scene for this year’s Ceremonial Finish.

And the Revival certainly brought new interest in Jeep as thousands of show-goers visited the brand’s key exhibition areas – a classic Jeep® Diner, Jeep at the Earls Court Motor Show, featuring 50s and 60s Jeep vehicles and the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee and Compass, Jeep at March Motor Works, displaying a Jeepster in a typical 1950s US garage, and the Jeep 4x4 Experience. As well as the entertainment from the Milkshakers rock band and Lindy Hop dancers, Jeep also served a US-style lunch to its UK dealers and their guests, and hosted a VIP afternoon tea for European media.

“This was an extremely busy weekend for Jeep with so much activity going on and such a huge crowd visiting this fantastic Revival weekend,” says Nigel Land, brand director, Jeep Chrysler in the UK. “We were able not only to revel in the heritage of the remarkable Jeep brand, but also to show people the stunning new Jeep range of vehicles that we are selling today.”

RANGE ROVER EVOQUE TO MAKE A SPLASH AT LONDON PRESS CLUB BALL

15 September 2011
One of the most sought-after cars in Britain is to be the star charity auction prize at this year’s prestigious London Press Club Ball. More than 400 of Britain’s leading journalists, media executives and VIP guests will be able to bid for a year’s driving of the award-winning new Range Rover Evoque . Funds raised will be used to support the Journalists’ Charity which was set up nearly 150 years ago to help journalists and their families who fall on hard times – in print and now on air and online.

This year’s allocation of the stylish, trend-setting ‘baby’ Range Rover is already sold out. So a winning bid in the charity auction will be the best chance to jump the queue to get behind the wheel of the luxury Evoque sports utility vehicle. The star auction prize Evoque is provided courtesy of British luxury car-maker Jaguar Land Rover. It has already been named Auto Express ‘Car of the Year’. As part of its sponsorship package, Jaguar Land Rover is also auctioning a special Jaguar driving experience at the world famous Nuerburgring racing circuit in Germany. And it is making a generous £15,000 donation to the Journalists’ Charity. This year’s charity fund-raising London Press Club Ball is being hosted by TV and news presenter Moira Stuart in the Great Hall of the capital’s Natural History Museum on Thursday October 13, 2011.

Barclays are the main sponsor for the evening and for the fifth year in succession. Jaguar Land Rover is the automotive sponsor. PaddyPower is for the second year sponsoring the champagne reception and airline easyJet is sponsoring the super raffle. The Ball is a glittering upmarket event supported by the major newspaper groups and attended by chief executives, editors, journalists and television presenters and programme makers from the major national newspapers and TV companies. London Press Club Ball chairman Philippa Kennedy OBE said: ‘This is the seventh time the London Press Club has run the annual press ball and it has so far has raised more than £200,000 for the Journalists’ Charity. 'The highlight of the evening is the fabulous 'money can’t buy' auction which includes fabulous exotic holidays and events. The top item this year is a fantastic Range Rover Evoque.’

Journalists’ Charity chairman Bill Hagerty said: ‘The London Press Club Ball has become firmly established in the UK media’s social calendar – and it’s all in a good cause. ‘The Journalists’ Charity has been helping journalists in need and their families for nearly 150 years. It is the industry’s own charity for those who are working, or have worked, in print, on air or online.’ A spokesman for Jaguar Land Rover said: ‘Jaguar Land Rover is pleased to be supporting the London Press Club Ball in support of the Journalists’ Charity at an exciting time for the company and for the launch of the new Range Rover Evoque.’

WHO MAKES THE BEST 4X4s? THAT’LL BE LAND ROVER

1 September 2011
Land Rover blitzes rivals in a poll of 40,000 people to find the UK’s favourite 4x4 maker

Not for the first time, Land Rover has blown its off-roader rivals into the weeds. The famous British marque claimed an astonishing 54% of the vote in a new MSN Cars poll. Just under 40,000 people provided their answer to the question; “Which firm makes the best ‘4x4’ type cars” when it was posed on the MSN Cars website this August. Respondents were invited to choose their favourite from a list of 12 leading 4x4 manufacturers that included the likes of Jeep, Mitsubishi and Subaru as well as premium marques like BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. With second-placed Toyota polling just 9% of the vote, Land Rover’s 54% was the definition of an emphatic victory. Audi arrived in third place with 8%.

The MSN Cars poll clearly shows that the UK public continue to hold a special place in their hearts for Land Rover and its products. The first vehicle to carry the famous name appeared way back in 1948 and, although the company is now owned by TATA Motors, its headquarters are still based in Gaydon, Warwickshire. The current Land Rover range includes household names like the Freelander, Discovery and Defender models, along with the premium Range Rover and Range Rover Sport line-ups. "We are thrilled that MSN users have voted Land Rover their favourite 4x4 brand,” says Colin Green, managing director of Land Rover UK. “We know that Land Rover has some of the best brand loyalty figures in the industry and this poll is testament to that. Taking over half the votes is a great achievement and goes to prove that Land Rover really does make the world's most authentic 4x4s. Thank you to everyone who voted for us!"

“As one of Britain’s most cherished car companies, it’s no surprise to see Land Rover top our poll as the maker of the best 4x4 vehicles,” says Tom Evans, editor of MSN Cars. “Its profile is about to get much higher with the arrival on our roads of a handsome, compact and affordable model in the shape of the Range Rover Evoque, which looks set to be a great success.”

NEW DIESEL ENGINE POWERS THE CLEANEST EVER DEFENDER FOR 2012

12 August 2011
A new EU5 2.2-litre diesel engine replaces the EU4 2.4-litre diesel for 2011, bringing greater levels of performance and refinement to the 2012 Defender. The smaller capacity engine delivers the same power, torque and economy as its outgoing unit but makes this the cleanest Land Rover Defender yet produced. In EU5 markets, the new engine comes with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to ensure the lowest possible levels of regulated emissions. The Defender can trace its roots back to 1948 and during that period Land Rovers have earned a reputation as the most rugged and versatile off-road vehicles in the world. Since the current model's introduction in 2007, the Defender has consistently sold an average of 25,000 units a year worldwide. Retail and utility customers, armed forces and NGOs in over 100 countries believe that the Defender's off-road ability, durability and towing capability are still head and shoulders above the competition. Such a unique combination of attributes explains why this legendary vehicle commands such exceptionally high standards of customer loyalty. "The substantial improvements to the Defender in 2007 transformed its on-road refinement and comfort whilst extending its legendary capability off-road for which Defender is synonymous. With the introduction of the new 2.2-litre diesel engine and two option packs, the Defender for 2012 now offers greater customer choice than ever before," said John Edwards, Land Rover Global Brand Director.

The new EU5 2.2-litre diesel engine replaces the EU4 2.4-litre diesel while matching it for power, torque and fuel consumption. A new, full acoustic engine cover replaces the previous splash cover, reducing radiated engine noise and improving driving refinement. Meeting EU5 regulations, the engine delivers lower levels of the regulated emissions, NOx, CO and HC thanks to an improved combustion system and sophisticated engine management system. In EU5 markets, particulate matter has been reduced to EU5 levels with a diesel particulate filter (DPF). Despite the smaller capacity and reduced emissions, the new engine produces the same power, 122PS@3,500rpm and torque, 360Nm@2,000rpm, as the outgoing 2.4-litre engine. Performance remains similar too, though the top speed has been raised to 90mph compared to 82mph for the previous version. CO2 emissions on the combined cycle are consistent at 266g/km for the 90 and 295g/km for the 110 and 130. The GFT MT 82 six-speed gearbox has been retained for 2012 with its excellent ratio spread, high top gear for cruising and enhanced low-speed crawl capability. The lower first gear offers low crawl speed making towing on-road and off-road much easier. The low-down engine torque also helps in-gear acceleration and the tall sixth gear ensures excellent real-world cruising, refinement and fuel economy. Ground gears in both the gearbox and transfer box help contribute to the refinement of the transmission

In response to customer feedback, a plain black Pick Up hood will now be available as an option whilst a plain beige hood will be introduced for the 110 Double Cab Pick Up. Both options are in addition to existing styles. A further enhancement for 2012 includes the addition of tinted glass on all models. The Defender's facia is based on a single, large moulding supported on a robust steel rail to help eliminate squeaks and rattles. The instruments provide clear, concise information to the driver, and details like all-LED instrument illumination help ensure high standards of reliability. Versatile stowage shelves are conveniently located for both the driver and passenger and two console options are available: a practical open-tray design that keeps contents to hand and a large, lidded design that provides an impressive 14-litres of stowage. A powerful heating and ventilation system is designed to cope with the most extreme climates and features aluminium plate and fin heat exchangers to deliver impressive performance. Tall front seats are designed to improve maximum back support and head restraint ergonomics in the most demanding driving conditions and there are robust, supportive second row seats too. 110 Station Wagon and 130 Crew Cab models can comfortably accommodate three occupants on an asymmetrically-split second row seat. A spring-assisted fold mechanism helps when folding the seats for carrying large or awkward loads. Defender 90 Station Wagon second row occupants benefit from a pair of individual, full-size, forward-facing rear seats. Providing excellent comfort levels, these seats are also available as a third row option on the 110 Station Wagon. Accessed either through the rear door or by folding the second row seats, they can be easily folded and stowed sideways in the loadspace. Seat trims include durable all-vinyl and cloth specifications; a half-leather option is also included in the XS specification available on Station Wagon and 110 Double Cab Pick-Up derivatives to add a touch of luxury to the cabin. Three-point safety belts are specified for all seating positions. Defender's unique vehicle architecture has been retained for 2012. The chassis frame is available in three different wheelbases. A total of 14 separate body styles – from pick-ups and soft-tops to crew cabs and station wagons – are produced on the mainstream production line. The 2012 Defender is available from £20,995 on the road and will be on-sale in the UK from November 2011. LAND ROVER ENTERS THREE CONCEPT RANGE_E 4WD PLUG-IN DIESEL HYBRIDS IN RAC FUTURE CAR CHALLENGE 2011

5 August 2011
Following its debut at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, Land Rover is using the RAC Future Car Challenge as the first opportunity to showcase three of its Range_e concept models in the UK. The Land Rover Range_e is the latest manufacture to enter the event and has allocated three of its concept Range_e models, which made its debut at this year's Geneva Motor Show. This development model is equipped with an advanced plug-in hybrid diesel-electric powertrain that Land Rover expects to make available in future production models, following the scheduled launch of its diesel-electric hybrid in 2013.

The Range_e is one of a number of Land Rover projects supported by the UK Government's Technology Strategy Board and five prototype models are currently engaged in a test programme with Land Rover's fellow members of the CABLED - Coventry and Birmingham Low Emissions Demonstrators - consortium. Land Rover anticipates its plug-in hybrid system will be brought to market in the near future, following on from the debut of its first standard diesel-electric hybrid models from 2013. The Range_e is based on the Range Rover Sport and uses the current 245PS 3.0-litre TDV6 diesel engine, working with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission and a 69kW electric motor. Using a parallel hybrid system, with a 14.2kW/h lithium-ion battery that can be recharged from an external 240V power source, the Range_e can be driven on electric power alone for more than 20 miles, with zero harmful tailpipe emissions. Overall CO2 emissions are just 89g/km.

An increasing number of major automotive manufacturers are, like Land Rover, choosing to showcase pre-production low-energy vehicles at the RAC Future Car Challenge. Not only does this promote them to a large audience being driven on public roads but the robust energy measurement processes, directed by Dr Ricardo Martinez-Botas of the New Energy Lab at Imperial College London, give reliable information on their performance. Ben Cussons, Chairman of the Royal Automobile Club Motoring Committee and the FCC Technical Panel, says: "We very much welcome the involvement of Land Rover by entering three of its prototype Range_e vehicles. The RAC Future Car Challenge is, by definition, an event to bring future vehicle technology to the attention of the car buying public. This will enable them to make better informed choices when considering the environmental impact of future vehicle purchases."

Citing the Evoque’s ‘mould breaking’ looks and driving dynamics as key factors in its success, the magazine also praised its keen pricing: “The Evoque puts the hugely desirable Range Rover brand within the reach of compact executive car buyers for the very first time,” said Auto Express Acting Editor Graham Hope. “The fact it looks and drives the way it does serves only to underline its premium appeal. “The winner of the Auto Express Car of the Year prize really needs to break the mould – and the Range Rover Evoque does exactly that. You have only to look at its concept car styling to see why the British firm already has a bulging order book for the new baby of its range. Its appeal goes far beyond its distinctive styling.”

Land Rover UK Managing Director Colin Green welcomed the recognition: “The first production Evoque was driven off the line at Land Rover’s Halewood manufacturing plant in Liverpool only last month. To receive an accolade such as this so soon, and from such a respected journal as Auto Express, is a huge boost for the talented and dedicated professionals who have worked so hard and so long to bring the Evoque to market.” Mr. Green is delighted also by the success of the Land Rover Discovery 4: “The Discovery trophy cabinet is already huge, and this second successive Auto Express Award for the latest incarnation of the model underlines its superiority in a highly competitive market segment, and adds to the pride we feel today.”

Auto Express says of the award-winning Discovery 4: “The versatile Land Rover has figured on the winners’ list at our annual awards for seven successive years, and it’s easy to see why. The latest Discovery 4 marries high-class fixtures and fittings with huge dimensions and unrivalled off-road ability. Better still, a revised model with more power and lower emissions is due to hit the showrooms in October.” With a choice of three engines, two body styles, three design themes and a wide range of options and accessories, the new Range Rover Evoque offers customers significant choice across a range of price points. The entry level eD4 Pure 5-Door Range Rover Evoque starts at £27,955 and the top-of-the-range Si4 6 Speed automatic Dynamic coupé with LUX pack is available for £44,320. Offered in both 5-door and Coupé forms, the Evoque goes on-sale next month. More than 18,000 advance orders have been received by Land Rover.

NUMBER ONE EVENTER WILLIAM FOX-PITT COLLECTS NEW JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE

26 July 2011
He’s used to horse power, but now the UK’s top three-day-event rider William Fox-Pitt is discovering what 237 of them feel like – after taking delivery of a new Jeep Grand Cherokee. The three times World Champion, three times Olympian and eight times British number one is the latest top sports star to choose Jeep as his mode of transport, and the new flagship 4WD’s blend of luxury, space and unbeatable off-road capability will suit William perfectly.

With 237 bhp and 550 Nm of torque available from the 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel engine, the new Grand Cherokee will have no problems coping with the country terrain so regularly visited by William, nor with his requirement for a car that can tow a large horse box or trailer. The new car – launched last month (June) – has been designed on a new platform to deliver premium on-road performance while maintaining the legendary Jeep four-wheel drive torque-on-demand off-road capability. And with significantly lower emissions than its predecessor and fuel consumption of up to 34 mpg (Combined), the new Grand Cherokee is attracting great attention from media and customers alike.

Born in 1969, William Fox-Pitt started eventing aged 15. The first British rider to become eventing’s World number one, William’s achievements in the sport put him among the most successful British event riders of all time. He has represented Great Britain consistently over the last 15 years, including the 2004 Athens Olympics, 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Kentucky, USA. “I have the British Open and the European Championships coming up, followed by events at Burghley and Blenheim, so the Jeep’s four-wheel drive capability is going to be very useful,” says William. “The car will also be vital in the winter, and during wet British summers! “The large boot space is essential, and there is plenty of space in the back for my two sons. All in all it’s a fantastic new car which will suit my busy lifestyle very well.”

The Grand Cherokee range starts at £36,795 (OTR) for the 3.0 CRD V6 Limited, rising to £43,995 (OTR) for the flagship Overland.

VOLVO XC BRAND ESTABLISHES ITSELF IN THE USED MARKET

25 July 2011
More that ten years after its launch, the Volvo XC (Cross Country) brand has established itself in the highly competitive 4x4/SUV sector by achieving consistently strong residual values at auction. More than 100 Volvos went under the hammer at a recent open auction at BCA Bedford, including 10 XC60 and XC90 models. Volvo's used prices bucked the trend by performing well ahead of average market prices, despite used values of 4x4s falling in recent months.

A 60-plate XC60 D5 AWD R-Design finished with 16,889 miles on the clock made £30,600, £3,700 more than the CAP Clean valuation. Meanwhile a 60-plate D5 SE R-Design AWD XC90 Geartronic with just 3,740 miles on the clock made £32,300, £3,150 more than the CAP Clean evaluation. "Everybody knows that strong used values are a true measure of a car's desirability in the second hand market and both the XC60 and XC90 are becoming consistently sought after by used car buyers," said Selwyn Cooper, Volvo Car UK's national corporate operations manager. "Strong used values are also the key drivers in reducing contract hire and Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) monthly rentals, which spells lower costs for business and personal motorists alike," he added.

Strong residuals are helping Volvo offer some attractive contract hire rates for corporate buyers through its in house provider Volvo Car Leasing. The XC60 D5 AWD 215hp ES Start Stop is available for just £379 per month, the XC90 D5 AWD 200hp SE Geartronic for £429 per month and the XC70 D3 DRIVe ES Start Stop for £339. All prices are ex VAT on three year/10,000 mile per annum contracts.

LAND ROVER TO THE FORE AT THE 2011 CLA GAME FAIR

15 July 2011
As the world’s biggest celebration of country sport and pursuits, The CLA Game Fair provides Land Rover with a superb opportunity to connect with a key part of its UK market. This year’s event at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire (22nd to 24th July), promises to attract thousands of visitors to enjoy a vast range of country pursuits, competitions, demonstrations and crafts.

Land Rover will be once again proudly displaying its full model line-up at the fair, this time with the new attraction of the Range Rover Evoque Coupe and 5-door. The new Evoque’s debut at the event forms part of a busy programme of preview displays at equestrian and countryside events that are introducing the “compact” Range Rover to the British public, demonstrating that its cool contemporary styling is underpinned by traditional Land Rover quality and engineering. The Land Rover Experience will also be at The Game Fair, demonstrating just some of the off-road strengths that have made Land Rover an iconic brand around the world, with passenger rides over a purpose-built course.

As a well-established supporter of The CLA Game Fair, Land Rover will again be sponsoring the Clay Pigeon Shooting Association’s Champion of Champions competition in which individual county champions contest an overall title. Additionally, Land Rover is also sponsoring the fair’s new VIP Club. The Club promises visitors a first class experience, with use of a concierge service, refreshments throughout the day and exclusive seating.

IT’S GAME ON FOR JEEP IN BIG COUNTRY SHOW DEBUT

15 July 2011
The new Jeep Grand Cherokee is to make its first ever appearance at the CLA Game Fair, the world’s largest country sports and pursuits event. With more than 140,000 visitors from across the globe, and incorporating the UK’s largest shooting and fishing shows, the Game Fair, which this year is situated at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, is an ideal venue for the new Jeep flagship, which was launched in Britain last month.

It will be driven there by Claire Zambuni, owner of The Shooting Society and The Covert Girls, who is recognised as one of the UK’s leading ladies in shooting, and is listed in The Field magazine’s 100 Best Shots Ever. Claire is a new ambassador for the Jeep brand and drives a Grand Cherokee Limited. Designed on a new platform to offer the driver premium on-road performance coupled with legendary capability off-road, the new Jeep Grand Cherokee has significantly lower emissions and improved fuel consumption figures when compared with its predecessor. Its new 3.0-litre V6 CRD diesel engine powers the car from 0-62 mph in just 8.2 seconds and goes on to a top speed of 126 mph, yet the 237bhp unit returns 34.0 mpg on the combined cycle.

The Grand Cherokee range starts at £36,795 OTR for the 3.0 CRD V6 Limited, rising to £43,995 for the 3.0 CRD V6 Overland. “I am delighted to have the opportunity to drive a new Grand Cherokee,” says Claire Zambuni, who is a council member of the BASC (British Association for Shooting and Conservation), Chairman of the London BASC Social Committee, and a member of The Worshipful Company of Gunmakers. “Grand Cherokee’s eye-catching design is stunning, with a wonderful combination of size, versatility, comfort and superb four-wheel drive capability. All of these elements are vital in a car for field sports, and at a price that makes sense for such a good combination of a city and country vehicle. It will be a top choice for people with outdoor jobs like me.”

The CLA Game Fair 2011 will be held from 22-24 July.

NEW LOOK AND NEW FEATURES FOR 2012 TOYOTA HILUX

15 July 2011
Toyota’s “indestructible” Hilux has a new look and new hi-tech features for 2012. The redoubtable pick-up has been given a comprehensive re-style from the A-pillar forwards, with a new bonnet, radiator grille, headlamps and bumper, plus new wheel designs and new side bars and steps for the top-of-the-range Hilux Invincible. The interior has been given a new look, too, with new upper dashboard design and horizontal instrument cluster that emphasise the breadth and roominess of the cabin.

The revised lay-out incorporates the new Toyota Touch multimedia unit with a full colour 6.1-inch touchscreen. The Touch package, fitted as standard to the HL3 and I nvincible models also includes Bluetooth and a USB port for connecting digital music players. The quality feel of the cabin has been improved with new, uniform dark finishes and new chrome surround for the instrument binnacle on the Invincible. The 2012 Hilux carries forward its current engines, the 142bhp 2.5 D-4D and 169bhp 3.0 D-4D units, but these now comply with the Euro 5 light commercial vehicle emissions standards ahead of their introduction at the beginning of next year, thanks to the adoption of a diesel particulate filter (DPF). As a result of the adjustments to the engines, CO2 emissions for the 2.5 D-4D (Double Cab) have been cut by more than 10 per cent to 194g/km, becoming best in class and combined fuel consumption has also improved by more than 10 per cent to 38.7mpg (all bodystyles). The emissions figure for the 3.0 D-4D Double Cab automatic has fallen to 227g/km and the manual to 203g/km. Combined fuel consumption figures are improved from 31.7 to 32.8mpg and 34.0 to 36.7mpg respectively.

The standard five-speed manual transmission and the optional five-speed automatic for the 3.0 D-4D engine, exclusive to the Invincible, are also retained. Similarly the grade line-up of HL2, HL3 and Invincible, and the choice of single, extra and double cab bodystyles are offered for the 2012 model year. From launch, Hilux will be available with a comprehensive choice of accessory packs to tailor the vehicle to suit the needs of both business users and those owners who need to use Hilux for more everyday driving duties, or want to give their vehicle an extra dash of style.

NEW RANGE ROVER EVOQUE STARTS PRODUCTION

4 July 2011
The new Range Rover Evoque passed an important milestone today when the first production vehicle was driven off the line at Land Rover’s Halewood manufacturing plant in Liverpool. Jaguar Land Rover's CEO, Ralf Speth together with JLR executive officers, union representatives and employees, gathered to celebrate the start of new Range Rover Evoque production. The first car to come off the line will be donated to the British Motor Industry Heritage trust.

"The Evoque is an incredibly exciting vehicle that joins a product range which across both of our brands is the strongest we have ever had – and it fits in perfectly." commented Dr Ralf Speth, Jaguar Land Rover Chief Executive Officer." The teams that have designed engineered and built the new Evoque, working together with our research and supplier partners, can be immensely proud of their achievement. Worldwide interest in our new car has been exceptional, with 18,000 customer orders received from customers eager to be among the first to own the new Range Rover. Halewood Operations is central to the success of the Evoque, with the workforce doubling to more than 3,000 employees in order to deliver the new model. Seventy-five per cent of production is destined for export to more than 170 countries around the world, adding around £2 billion to the UK economy. Moreover, 50 per cent of the components in new Evoque are made in Britain, with contracts worth another £2 billion awarded to more than 40 UK supplier businesses.

“It is a groundbreaking product, a Range Rover with concept car looks, lightweight technologies and the capability to deliver 50mpg fuel economy. At the same time it’s still a true Range Rover that’s agile, nimble, designed to survive in the urban jungle and capable of tackling the toughest climates and terrains thanks to Land Rover’s legendary all-wheel drive expertise.” Speth added The launch of the Range Rover Evoque is just one of 40 new product actions that Jaguar Land Rover will carry out in the next five years in the most ambitious market offensive in the history of its two brands. This product creation programme is supported by annual investment of £1.5 billion in developing new models, engines, technologies and vehicle lines. Currently Jaguar Land Rover directly employs almost 19,000 people in the UK, and indirectly supports up to 140,000 further jobs through its supply chain, dealer network and associated business operations. Its success is reflected in after-tax profits of £1.043 billion for the 2010-2011 fiscal year.
